4 Rules for Business Gifting
As your company prepares for the holiday season you are probably thinking “I do a lot of business with ABC Company, “What should I get their sales representative for the holidays?”
Your first thought is probably to get him or her something expensive and flamboyant, thereby showing your appreciation for the company’s business. Stop right there, this is a time when you should NOT trust your first instinct.
Companies have become increasingly apprehensive about accepting gifts that might be considered a bribe or an enticement to do business.
Here are 4 simple rules to gift by:
- Check the policy of the company. Some companies completely prohibit the receiving of gifts by employees. In such a case, respect the company’s rules. Send a hand written holiday card to express your gratitude.
- Even if the company allows gifts, don’t go overboard. Expensive gifts make company representatives nervous. Many think that accepting a high-priced gift obligates them to continue doing business with you. There are many inexpensive yet very nice gifts that say “Thank You” without making the person uncomfortable.
- Gifts that have had some thought put behind them and take into consideration the recipients tastes or hobbies is always best to say “We appreciate your business”. Be sure to attach a card to the gift.
- DO NOT send “gifts” with corporate logos (pens, coffee mugs, Post-It notes). You will be remembered without your company name screaming at them.
Following simple, common sense guidelines for business gift giving will take you a long way in business situations that call for gifts.
