Are Your Customers Happy?

One thing that these economic times show us now, more than ever, is that it's imperative that we keep the customers we already have. Whatever business you're in, you already know that it can cost you a whole lot more to obtain a new customer than to keep your existing ones. Your profitability, not to mention your existence, depends on it.
So, how do you find out what's really important to your customers? You ask them!
As a business owner, I've found that taking the time to ask my customers some important questions has helped me to keep my finger on the pulse of what they like, dislike, would like to change and want to see more of... and the answers may surprise you.
Here are some questions to get you started:
On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, how would you rate your experience with us so far?
If less than 10, what can we do to improve your experience?
Do you think of us first when you need... (whatever you do -ei. plumbing, lawn care, eyeglasses, gifts, etc.)?
If not, who do you think of first?
What can they do for you that you feel we can't or won't do for you?
Really important: don't try to justify or fix it over the phone. Just take note of the answers your customers give.
Your customer's answers to these questions will give you a very good idea of what they think of you, what your competition is doing to win them over, and perhaps, some ideas of how you can better serve them. If you are not willing to ask your customers what they want, you will never know. You will just go on assuming they are satisfied. What if asking these simple questions could reveal one small thing you could implement or change, right now, to improve your customer's experience? Would it be worth it?
The fact that you are willing to invest time in finding out what's important to your customers will mean a lot to them and that creates customer loyalty and referrals... but only if you act on what you find out and make whatever changes needed to keep your customers coming back to you.
