Valentine's Day History
There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine's Day. Some experts say that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries.
Legend also has it that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.
Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.
In the United States, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the 1800's and now the spirit of good continues as valentines are sent out with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day
honors the birthday of the civil rights leader annually on the third Monday of January.
King started fighting for change. Spurred on by Rosa Parks' refusal and subsequent arrest to sit in the rear, "colored" section of the bus, King advocated a boycott of public buses that lasted more than a year. In 1956, the U.S. Supreme Court banned segregation on public buses, and a movement fueled by nonviolent protest began.
King is perhaps best remembered for delivering his 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech in front of a quarter of a million people in the Mall in Washington, DC. His famous line, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," still resonate today.
Dr. King continued his campaign for world peace. He traveled across America to support and speak out about civil rights and the rights of the underprivileged until he was killed in Memphis, where he was to lead a protest march--shot by an assassin while standing on the balcony outside his motel room.

Special Ideas for Valentines Day
If you want to give a different sort of gift for Valentines Day how about an exciting trip - with a bit of romance thrown in of course!
One of the most popular things to do is a Hot Air Balloon trip, of course you can't always do that on Valentines day itself, but the anticipation can make the trip more fun. There are a number of companies in most areas that do such trips, often with Champagne and brunch thrown in.
How about hiring/renting a really special car? If your Valentine loves speed and excitement, you could hire a sports car for the day and go for a drive with a lovely picnic to complete the day. If luxury is your thing then what about a limousine, complete with driver, for a romantic moonlit drive to a quiet place where you can see the moon and stars?
On the theme of vehicles you could also go on a boat trip, or even a short weekend cruise. A gentle cruise on a beautiful lake is something nearly everyone enjoys. If you really want to go to town you could book a romantic holiday cruise to the Caribbean or some other beautiful destination.
Day trips don't have to be extravagant though, what about tickets for your favorite sports team, a golf lesson together, something that helps share your interests as well as being fun. You can be grown up kids for a day and go to a Theme park, there are hundreds of possiblities that needn't cost a fortune. If you are an adrenaline junkie you could try something like a parachute jump, or white water rafting.
Days out for Valentines are something really special, the memories last for a long time - you could even buy a scrapbook and make a record of your day together so that in years to come you can look back and say 'Remember the day when.....'
